Sochi, 2014 | Winter Olympics

Who would believe that almost 2 years have passed since the London 2012 Olympics? Tomorrow, 2300 miles east of London, the winter Olympics begin in Sochi, Russia. Situated about half an hour from Georgia on the coast of the Black Sea, Sochi is Russia’s largest resort city and is twinned with the British town of Cheltenham.

Cool Runnings

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOne of the highlights will certainly be the Jamaican 2 man bobsleigh team competing. The support from the crowd will certainly be electric!  Their journey to Sochi has not been without drama, due to bad weather their plane was diverted and they missed their connecting flight. They have now safely arrived at the games, but their luggage and equipment is currently somewhere between JFK and Sochi! They plan to borrow equipment if theirs doesn’t arrive in time, the 2 man bob will certainly be one to watch. Who doesn’t love a good underdog story?

New Arrivals

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has confirmed the inclusion of 12 new events that will make their debut in Sochi, 2014.

Team Events: Biathlon relay, Figure skating, Luge

Men’s and Women’s: Ski halfpipe, Ski slopestyle, Snowboard slopestyle, Snowboard parallel slalom

Women’s: Women’s ski jumping

Team GB will be represented in only 3 of these disciplines; the Figure Skating team event and the Ski and Snowboard slopestyle. It will be great to see team camaraderie within figure skating as at the moment couples from the same country have a strong rivalry. It could be interesting to see how teams get on or conflict when their scores are aggregated!

Slopestyle is a competitive event for freestyle snowboarders and skiers. Athletes will be slopestylescored after descending a 655m course consisting of rails and a variety of jumps. This is certainly a high octane event so why not tune in and cheer on Team GB!

May we wish all the competitors Удачи! (good luck) and if you need a hand with any Russian translation, you know where we are!
